Magic Town

Malinalco, ancestral Magic Town

In a beautiful lush green valley at the foot of the mountains lies Malinalco, an ancestral Magic Town with cobblestone streets and colorful houses. As soon as you arrive, its green landscapes and soothing environment will immerse you in relaxation and reflection. Its streets are dotted with flowers sprouting from the walls of its colonial mansions and small churches from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries which will take you back on a journey through Mexico’s past.
Visit the hill of the idols, where you will find the archaeological site of Malinalco, one of the most beautiful in the state, and from where you will be able to enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the town. This ceremonial center was one of the most important centers for the Aztecs. Walk along a path of over 400 steps to reach the top where you will find the Sanctuary of the Eagle and Jaguar Warriors.
The entrance to this shrine is carved in the shape of the head of a snake, representing the underworld in a symbolic way. Inside, on a rock, are sculpted two eagles and a jaguar, which due to their monolithic features have been compared to Ellora in India and to the temple of Abu Simbel in Egypt. The orientation of this temple is the result of precise astronomical calculations, as a result of which you are able to see stunning light phenomena.
Walk along the center of this Magic Town and see its cobblestone streets, its orchards and colonial houses, all of which create a very special charm. If you visit it on a Wednesday, you will find n open air market reminiscent of pre-Hispanic life, with its handicrafts, earthenware, leather and stone objects and carved wood objects.
A place you must visit is the Agustinian Convent of the sixteenth century, which at first glance will remind you of a medieval construction due to its rustic and rough walls, its sober decor and square columns. Built in 1543 by the Agustinian order, it houses beautiful original frescoes which decorate the ceiling and walls of the hallways.
You cannot leave Malinalco without trying its cuisine. Try some of its typical dishes prepared with trout, iguana, rabbit, frog and salamander. Pair it with the excellent mescal produced in the southern area of the municipality or delicious pulque from the northern area.
